Why did you create FlyerJournal.com?

Some time ago I was planning my first long x-country trip in the US. I wanted to fly a cost-to-coast trip from California to Florida and back. During the preparations I found invaluable information that was available on various web pages prepared by other fellow pilots who flew either similar routes or visited the airfields I planned to visit during my trip. Sometimes however this information was quite hard to find because it was available mainly on independent web pages prepared individually by their authors. I also wanted to share the experience from the trip on the go with my family, friends and other who actively helped me in my preparations. I tried to do it on the go and I really missed an easy to use environment that would allow me to do it in a quick and convenient way. Instead I had to manually update my web page by writing HTML. I'm an IT professional so this was not so much of an issue for me, but even I found it annoying. That led me belief that many more pilots could share their experiences if they were only given an easy tool to do that. At the same time I also had an obvious (in my opinion) need to keep an electronic copy of my flight logbook and ideally have it aligned with my flight journals. I tried to find a web-based product that could offer what I needed i.e. web based logbooks plus flight journals with photo galleries. Unfortunately I could not find anything like that so I decided create one myself. Ever since I enjoy using it and I hope you will enjoy it too.

Who runs FlyerJournal.com?

Logbook
Can I define additional fields in the logbook?

Yes. FlyerJournal.com allows defining up to 8 fields to be included in each entry of your logbook. Each of these fields can have one of the following types:

  • Numeric - allows entering arbitrary numeric values
  • Count - allows entering integer values
  • Duration - allows entering flight (or other) durations in all supported formats (hours and tenths of hours or hours and minutes)
  • Text - allows entering arbitrary text up to 255 characters long
You can manage these custom fields in your Logbook Preferences page (you can access it from your main logbook page).

Can I make my logbook entries private?

Yes. You can choose to keep your logbook entries private. If you do so they will only be visible to you and they will not be presented to any other FlyerJournal.com visitors.
In order to make your logbook private you need to check Private checkbox on Logbook Preferences page that can be accessed from your main logbook page.

What do I need to do to get route map displayed in my logbook entry?

First of all you need to specify route in the logbook entry such that FlyerJournal.com will be able to find coordinates of your waypoints. This means that you should at least specify the airfields of departure and arrival in From and To fields accordingly and possibly some more airfields (separated with hyphens or spaces) on the way in the Via field. FlyerJournal.com first tries to interpret the waypoint names you specify as ICAO or national airport codes. Whenever possible you should specify your waypoints in this way. If the waypoint is given as a name of airfield then in most cases FlyerJournal.com will still be able to get its coordinates, but not always. Whenever airfield coordinates cannot be found there will be a note informing about it. If you know coordinates of the airfield that FlyerJournal.com failed to found you can define them by clicking on the waypoint name in the note and filling out the airfield registration page.

How to customize my logbook?

Logbook Preferences page that can be accessed from your main logbook page allows customizing the logbook according to your needs.
It allows customizing the following features:

  • Private - by checking this checkbox you can make your logbook visible to you only
  • Show map with route - controls if Google Map™ with your route overlaid is displayed for each logbook entry and in journals that have logbook entries associated with them
  • Duration format - you can choose how to display the flight durations. You can switch between FAA (hours and tenths of hour) and JAA (hours and minutes) formats.
  • Date and time format - controls the display format of your logbook entries dates and times
  • Export specific options
  • Custom logbook fields

How to enter flight duration?

Flight duration can be entered in the following two ways:

  • FAA style: hours and tenths of hour, e.g. 1.9
  • JAA style: hours and minutes, e.g. 1:54
Although you are free to choose the format when entering the flight duration the format in which they are later displayed in your logbook is determined by your selection in the Logbook Preferences.
Please note that these two methods offer different accuracy and when you enter duration in JAA format (more precise) and your display preference is FAA (less precise) the displayed duration in FAA format may differ slightly from the duration that you have entered in JAA format.

How can I enter a new logbook entry?

You can enter logbook entry by filling out logbook entry form that you will access by clicking [New] link on the logbook main page or [New logbook entry] link on your homepage. Of course you need to be logged-in first.

How to define a new make & model?

New aircraft type can be defined by clicking the "Add a new make&model..." link on the aircraft definition form.

How to define a new aircraft?

When you enter or edit logbook entry Aircraft ident. drop down list contains all aircrafts that you have flown so far (based on your past logbook entries entered in FlyerJournal.com). If the aircraft you have flown is not present on this list then you should click on the "Add a new aircraft..." link. This will cause a new pop-up window to be opened in which you should enter the aircraft's identifier and press Find button. If this aircraft is already in FlyerJournal.com database then you are presented with its details (such as type and Airliners.net Photo ID) and it is added to the aircrafts drop down list once you press the Choose button.
In case the aircraft with this identifier is not known to FlyerJournal.com yet you need to first define it by choosing its Make & model and (if available) Airliners.net Photo ID. Once defined it will automatically be added to the FlyerJournal.com database and aircrafts drop down list.

Why do I need to define aircraft make & model?

FlyerJournal.com team is not able to define aircraft characteristics of all aircraft make and models that you once flew, are flying now or maybe fill fly in the future.

Can I export my logbook?

Yes. You can export all your logbook entries into a plain text CSV file by pressing the [Export] link on the logbook main page and following instructions on the export page.
FlyerJournal.com strongly recommends that you do that on a periodical basis as an additional back up of your logbook entries.

Can I somehow enter starting logbook balances?

Yes. If you have already logged some time in other logbooks and cannot use import feature to import them to FlyerJournal.com you can take the totals and enter them as a single entry in the FlyerJournal.com with an arbitrary date that. If you can divide them into individual aircraft then we suggest that you do so, otherwise you can choose a predefined dummy aircraft identifier called INITIAL. You will also have to fill out the From field of the route, again we suggest you put initial there.

Text formatting in journals
How can I enrich my journal text appearance?

You can use many text-formatting modifiers. The best way of learning how to use them is to login as demo member (User ID: demo, Password: demo) and going to the "Text formatting samples" entry of the "Non-draft journal". For your convenience you can click this link to go directly to that journal entry. In order to see the source of that journal entry text you need to be logged-in as demo member and click the [Edit entry] link.

How do rich text formatting buttons work?

All formatting buttons insert special formatting tags in your text. The exact behaviour of these buttons depends on the web browser you are using. However all browsers will at least insert the tag at the end of the text you are editing. In case of formatting that requires so called opening and closing tag the first inserted tag will be opening one, and when the button is pressed again the closing tag will be added at the end of your text. In case you need to apply some formatting to the text, which is not at the end, then you have to manually cut'n'paste the formatting tag into the appropriate place. Luckily some browsers (including IE and FireFox) will also insert opening and closing tag directly around the current text selection. Please note that the tags that are inserted as a result of pressing any of formatting buttons are just plain text. Once you get some more experience you may find it more convenient to enter them by hand. You may also be already familiar with them from other web-based applications as we use so called BB formatting style, which is popular on many web-based forums.

How many photo thumbnails can be inserted in one journal or journal entry text?

You can insert up to 8 different photo thumbnails in one journal or journal entry text.

How can I include thumbnails of photos in journal texts?

You can use rich text editing capabilities of FlyerJournal.com to format your journal texts including inserting in the journal texts thumbnails of photos from your photo galleries. Photo thumbnails can be inserted in various places of your journal texts. Adding photo thumbnails in journal texts has to be done in the following three steps:

  1. Create journal or journal entry with text still without photo thumbnails
  2. Add photos to photo gallery that is associated with just created journal or journal entry
  3. Go to editing page of just create journal or journal entry, choose which photo thumbnails you intend to use in the text (by pressing the Add photo button) and then press the button below any of selected photos to insert its tag in the edited text
You can also see entries in "Entries with many photos" journal of demo member that present the most of them. For your convenience you can click this link to go directly to "Entries with many photos" journal. In order to see the source of the text of these journal entries you need to be logged-in as demo member and click the [Edit entry] link on each of these journal entries.
