I have never flown Katana before so I needed checkout in this plane. It took me quite some time to get an instructor to fly with me. Finally I managed to schedule the first flight for 13th September.
Before the flight there was something I have never experienced before - Chief mechanic examined me about airplane systems and airplane operations.
After passing the theoretical exam my instructor and I took-off from a very small private grass strip. At first I was a bit afraid because I never took-off from grass field before, but it turned out to be not much different from paved runway and certainly not more difficult. Similar the landing at that soft field was in a way even easier.
We flew to an old military airfield (currently this airfield is officially closed, but is common place for practising landings) and spent there couple of hours practising stop-and-goes, emergency procedures, stalls, etc.
After the flight my instructor said that I was OK to fly on my own.
Before this flight I expected more challenges from flying for the first time low-wing aircraft, which is much different from Cessnas, that I flew before, but that was not the case. I found Katana very comfortable plane to fly. I’m looking forward for some cross country flying.
